I was looking for a blu-ray player that could do the following (in order of preference):
1) Blu-ray playback
2) Playback of .mkv files from external sources (USB)
3) Netflix
4) YouTube
5) Spotify
The BDP-S6700 does all of the above, so I bought it 3 months ago, right when it came out.
Here are the positives:
1) WiFi
2) Dedicated button on the remote for Netflix
3) Very small remote control
4) It can also control the TV (the remote needs to be programmed, but it's very easy, you just hold down two buttons).
5) The device is very (and I mean VERY) small. About the size of a decoder. This could be a negative in a living room with audio systems, etc. as it looks very unattractive. But if space is limited, it's ideal.
6) Relatively fast menu
Unfortunately, it has a huge negative aspect, which is why I gave it 2 stars. It is not reliable at all. 8 out of 10 times I open it, something goes wrong (no exaggeration!). The most common problem is with blu-ray discs. If you leave the disc inside and try to open the device after a few days, it turns on but doesn't display anything on the TV. You have to open and close it about ten times, unplug it, perform a ritual, and then it works. Also, at random times, it stops working with various services like YouTube, and you have to unplug it again. It has had several updates since I bought it, but nothing has been fixed.
It's extremely frustrating to want to play some music or watch a series and end up spending 30 minutes trying to make it work. And of course, it has abandoned me at times when I've had friends over to watch a movie.
Maybe it wouldn't bother me so much if it had issues with some of the services it offers, but the fact that it fails to perform its primary function, playing blu-ray discs, is unacceptable.
If it didn't have these issues, it would definitely deserve 5 stars because it does everything else and quite well.
UPDATE after 3 years of use (12/5/2019):
Nothing has changed from the above, neither for the better nor for the worse. When it works, it works well, but there is no chance that I can use it without encountering at least one problem from start to finish. The only service where I face minimal to no issues is Netflix (fortunately). Most of the problems occur with Spotify, which eventually always freezes. And when I say "freezes," I mean the device completely freezes and only recovers if you unplug it. YouTube works fine, but there is the issue of having to use the remote to type in searches. If you mirror your phone and use the YouTube app on your phone, navigation becomes much easier, but the video quality is terrible. For music (where you don't necessarily need the TV), it's fine, but if you want to watch videos, it's frustrating because they play "choppily."
I still regret buying it. The price is great for what it can do on paper. However, in reality, it doesn't deliver. Considering that the device is already over 3 years old, the chances of the software improving dramatically are close to zero.
