It's fine, reliable, and functional.
Note that it does not have the LG logo on the device or the packaging, and the appearance is different from the photo. This is because it is an OEM product. I had to contact LG America to explain this to me (even though they normally only serve domestic customers), as at first I thought they sent me the wrong product and the store could not give me an answer (since the code was correct). Also, LG's representation in Greece is a joke and they do not deal with electronics, only with white goods.
This is the HL-DS-ST DVDRAM GP57EB40. In the product photos, it is the one that says "super multi", not the one with the LG logo, which is probably some other device.
I needed a DVD reader to transfer old CDs (data and audio) to the cloud and hard drives. Over 20% of the discs I tried either didn't recognize them at all or got stuck during reading and the job was not completed. Of course, these were more worn out CDs/DVDs but not damaged, as I didn't expect miracles.
I got another one from DELL and it managed to read 90% of those that it couldn't recognize or read the product we are discussing here.
If you want to recover old CDs/DVDs, then spend 20 euros more and go for something better.
I have had it for about 1 year and it is a joy..
I had read some negative reviews and I was cautious but everything is fine..
Of course, I don't use it often but whenever I need it, I have no problem..
I didn't need any adjustments or anything..
I don't know why other users hear noise; for me personally, it is silent and fast, while before I had a Buffalo brand and it made noise and didn't read well
You feel every time that it will explode, it makes a terrible noise, it gets stuck. Okay for me since I don't use it much, it's worth three stars, but for continuous use, it's better to choose something else
Beautiful, quiet, reads all CDs perfectly fine, although the quality of the disc tray is not top-notch, but I believe it won't break without sudden movements
At first, I was excited because it only has one cable that connects directly to the USB. However, when I held it in my hands, I realized that it is not well-made - very thin and fragile. The fourth time I tried to watch a DVD, it got stuck and never came out again, nor did it open so I could remove the DVD - I tried everything but nothing worked. In the end, I had to break it to at least save the DVD.
I do not recommend it to anyone, I would never buy it again - it's better for someone to spend a little more money to get better quality!
Until now it plays all the old DVDs I had. It had no problem recognizing the DVD. Ideal for computers that do not have a built-in drive in their case. It sounds slightly when reading but specifically in movies, mainly in the menus and not so much when the movie is playing. For its price, it is decent.
The only negative is the short cable. It is quite short (60cm). If you connect it to a PC, it needs to be next to or on top of the PC.
Perfect. It reads all my old CDs and DVDs flawlessly. The data transfer speed is satisfactory. Its small size and the fact that it only requires 1 USB are its positives. It is compatible with Windows 11/10/8/7 and can be connected to a television. The package includes a 50cm cable.
The secret to connecting it to a television is, while the drawer is open, press and hold the button for 2 seconds. Once the LED lights up, it means it has entered TV mode and will work like a conventional USB stick.
I have copied about twenty ancient VCDs to my computer using a simple program called cdburner, and it did everything quickly and easily... The computer has Windows 11... Now, the fact that it has a plastic casing doesn't bother me because it is lightweight and very aesthetically pleasing..!!
Good at its job, not very good build quality. Connected easily without any drivers. The speed is average to fast. I believe it will not have any issues in its performance.
Very good choice, worth their money. I bought it on March 23 and I have to say that in 2024 coffee spilled everywhere, I wiped it, dried it, and it still works! It really is worth the money!
For use on a Dell Laptop: you simply take it out of the box and connect it to the USB. It works immediately, I didn't need any special software, the computer recognized it right away. Even iTunes on Windows recognizes the CD immediately. Very good purchase!
I have it for almost 4 months to play some old games that I had on CD! It works great, it does its job, the only downside is that it has a short cable. Everything else is fine
There are many comments from other people, I will only focus on the positive ones because it deserves it.
Now, the really nice thing it does is that it also plays as a DVD on the television. I have read several reviews saying that it doesn't play, they should read the instructions carefully because it requires a simple adjustment and it will play perfectly.
A simple drive, you plug it in and the PC recognizes it. It's not something that will impress you visually, it's made of plastic, but it will get the job done.
It is made of plastic, very lightweight. The computer recognized it immediately. The DVD was recognized immediately and played without delays or freezes. It is not manufactured by LG, but by Hitachi-LG Data Storage, which is a collaboration for DVD player manufacturing. It connects via USB2 and has a miniUSB port. The cable is very short, 50-60cm, and has a barrel for interference protection. It was tested on a TV box, but it does not work.
I purchased the product in July 2022. I have been using it for a few days and so far I am satisfied. It is relatively quiet even when writing at high speed. The build quality seems satisfactory. For the price it currently has (25 euros), I consider it a good choice. I will mention any findings in a future update.
Edit: 30/8/2022
The negative thing I have to mention is that the cable is short, causing me to rest the drive on top of the computer case and thus obstructing the airflow from the fans. Other than that, what I wrote above still holds true. So far, I have written 10-15 discs and have not noticed any issues, it does its job perfectly.
I have had it for 3 months, I have written about ten CD MP3s without any problem and everything is fine. No complaints anywhere. Hopefully, it will be reliable for a long time.
Excellent product and it does its job perfectly.
I gave it 5 stars because it really does what it's supposed to do, and there aren't many options for those who have already built a PC without a choice to install a DVD ROM Drive.
1. It's plug&play... Like connecting an external USB hard drive to your PC.
2. It is recognized by programs like ImgBurn, CDBurnerXP, Nero, etc.
3. The reading speed is fast and immediate.
4. It is silent during DVD playback. It makes a little noise when recording at 8X, but not annoying.
5. The DVD writing speed is limited to 8X. I don't know if this is positive or negative, as I rarely used the 16X of my DVD ROMs in the past. It may take a little longer to write, but at least it doesn't require verification for the files we have transferred to the disc.
Overall, I gave it 5 stars because, as I mentioned earlier, I haven't tried other USB DVD ROM drives in the past... and I probably don't need to. Its construction seems durable (similar to WD external hard drives). It works perfectly. Immediate connectivity with the PC. Good reading/writing times.
For the price it is sold... it's a value for money purchase.
The product is very good and worth its money, just know that when you insert a CD, you need to press the middle part to catch and start playing. These are our farewell words from Thessaloniki
Let's start with the fact that when it arrived, it didn't say LG but H-L Data Storage, which confused me since the online store Skroutz has photos of 3 different models. After minimal research, I found that whether it's H-L (Hitachi-LG) or just LG, it's the same model.
In terms of quality, it seems to be quite good, with plastics that you don't fear will break in your hand. The top part is glossy, resulting in it attracting everything from dust to fingerprints (and more...). Be careful, it looks like it has a protective film but it doesn't. I wouldn't recommend trying to remove it.
It has its own programs (CyberLink Media Suite) for photo and video playback, as well as for burning files onto CD/DVD.
It comes with a mini-USB to USB 2.0 cable for connecting to a computer or TV (according to the packaging). Unfortunately, I connected it to two TVs, one through a decoder and the other directly with the USB, but it doesn't seem to work, as it doesn't read that an external drive is connected. It works perfectly fine on the computer though!
As for the noise during reading or writing, it is quite audible, especially when there are sudden changes in speed. However, when watching movies, it is silent and doesn't surprise you with sudden noises in the middle of playback.
TL;DR
Recommended, due to its fairly good build quality, the extra programs and drivers provided with it, and the silent operation when playing movies.
Not recommended as a DVD player for a TV, as it is uncertain how well it works with them.
It is worth it and more for the money it is sold. It reproduces all the CDs and DVDs I tried without any issues and also records everything, as long as you use the appropriate software.
Honest, it's worth what it costs. The main reasons I chose it are the price and the fact that it only occupies one USB port (unlike some more expensive ones). The device doesn't say LG, it says Hitachi-LG on the external packaging. The package includes the device, the (small) connecting cable for connection to the computer, and a CD with Cyberlink software. The cable is sufficient for a notebook, but you may find it too short for connection to a desktop. The software is good to have, but it reminded me of applications from 20+ years ago, so I uninstalled it.
A very good device, quiet and with a very beautiful design. Reading - Writing (CD & DVD) without any problem on all discs. The price is excellent for this product!
