Description
Translated into English, thirty selected poems that represent the entire mature period of our great poet and provide a complete picture of his work as well as the creator himself.
With the challenge of translation, Professor David Connolly of A.P.Th. was involved. who has been dealing with Cavafy and his work for years. He also signs an extremely informative introduction, which introduces the reader to the value of his work, gives the stamp of his creative journey and reconstructs the atmosphere of the era he lived in. However, the introduction is also highly interesting for those who know and study Cavafy, as it talks about the poet's language and its idioms, about the process of translation and the form of his writings.
From the classic recognized "Ithaca" and "Candles", from the mythological like "The Escort of Dionysus" to the historical like "Thermopylae" and to the more human and sensual like "The Souls of the Elders" and "Remember Body", Cavafy sensitizes, puzzles, inspires and rewards every reader.
There are multiple recipients of such an edition, as the book is not only addressed to foreigners visiting our country and wanting to get to know another voice of the Greek spirit. The book concerns the scholars of modern Greek literature, Greeks and foreigners, second-generation Greeks who grow up far from direct stimuli, as well as all those who teach or learn English, and vice versa. It is also a very good gift for English-speaking friends.
The cover artwork was specially designed for the edition by Konstantinos Markopoulos.
