In the near future, a colossal and mysterious object of unknown origin appears in Earth's orbit. Due to its shape, the world calls it Metaedro. A crew of four individuals called S.C.A.R. (Sentient Contact Assessment and Response) travels aboard the ship Hermes to analyze the mystery alien object.

As they approach Metaedro and begin scanning it electronically, the object starts pulling Hermes towards it. The crew loses control of the ship and everything turns white. The game's heroine, Kate, regains consciousness on an alien planet - she is alone and the rest of the crew is nowhere to be seen. As she begins to see visions of a spectral form, she discovers that weeks or even months have passed since the start of her mission. Kate also learns that her team has managed to survive on the planet. As she searches for them, she discovers that the mission's leader (Robinson) has transformed into a grotesque creature, but Tamara and Mike (the other members) are still alive, although Mike appears to be starting to mutate and Tamara has disappeared while seeking a way to help him. Thus begins a mission to find and rescue them.
