The new GH6 for the first time relies on a 25.2Megapixel Live MOS M4/3 sensor and of course, the emphasis is once again on video with 5.7K 30p ProRes 422HQ and for the first time storage on a CFExpress type B card with support for non-linear editing without transcoding. Video options also include 5.7K 4.2.0 10bit at 60p or alternatively 5.8K 30p/25p/24p 4.2.0 10bit anamorphic 4:3 with full pixel readout. Because similar frame rates and resolutions develop high temperatures that make heat dissipation difficult with typical passive cooling systems, Panasonic has incorporated active cooling with a silent fan into the GH6.
The new sensor is distinguished by its 12-stop dynamic range, which extends to 13 stops if the special Dynamic Range Boost function is used. Additionally, for the first time in a Micro 4/3 camera, V-Log/V-gamut is supported. As for audio recording, it is greatly improved with four-channel sound at 48KHz or 96KHz. In fact, during the camera's premiere, it was announced that new features would be integrated in the next firmware update.
The sensor stabilization system is state of the art with 5-axis gyroscopic sensors and Dual IS 22, which means it combines the effect on both the sensor and the lens, achieving a performance of 7.5 stops (one of the best performances in the imaging world). The same mechanism is activated to produce impressive Hi Res 100Megapixel (11552x8672pixel) multi-shot files. Panasonic even mentions that HiRes will be able to operate handheld without necessarily using a tripod. It performs eight consecutive frames that are combined into one ultra-high-resolution image.
Like all Micro 4/3 cameras, it is complemented by a large number of lenses. Thirty Micro 4/3 lenses are available in Panasonic's range alone, complemented by lenses from Olympus and third-party manufacturers. In fact, we learn that the GH6 has all the characteristics of at least Panasonic's lenses stored in memory, so that corrections for geometry, chromatic, and other aberrations are made automatically.
