Description

Who, really, was that little girl who grew up between New York and Greece, was blackmailed to sing by her emotionally abusive mother, married a man who stole from her, and fell in love with a tycoon who treated her violently and disdainfully?

Through unpublished correspondence of Maria Callas, Lyndsy Spence sheds light on the tragic private life of the great Greek diva. In Callas's own words, we learn how Onassis drugged her, Menegini wrote her earnings in his name, and her father pretended to be dying penniless in a hospital in an attempt to extort money from her…

The woman who battled a neuromuscular disorder, who lost her voice due to her illness and excesses, and who at the end of her life, alone in Paris, asked her sister for tranquilizers, is the same person who still evokes immense emotion through her masterful recordings. The tragic story of Maria Callas, perhaps the greatest soprano in opera history, is reconstructed through previously unknown material by historian Lyndsy Spence.

There is no more detailed book that contains all the details of her life. I also read things that I have never seen anywhere else, and I have read and seen everything related to her.

An exceptionally detailed biographical work on the life of the great opera diva. The author Lindsay Spence conducted thorough research studying all available material surrounding the life of Maria Callas (her own letters, correspondence exchanged with her mother and sister, biographical details of her parents, articles in the press, official and unofficial gossip, news and reports concerning her personal, family, and professional life). The information recorded is so dense that it resembles a diary; however, it is written with literary completeness and skill, keeping the reader's interest alive, who eagerly anticipates the next chapter of the great star's life. Through this multi-page biography, the iconic figure of Maria emerges vividly, which the author reconstructs with great respect but also compassion for this small tormented girl whose soul thirsted for acceptance and recognition. While reading it, I constantly recalled the image of Callas with her large black, always sad eyes, which, however, filled with fire when she sang. And if the people around her hurt her, loved her, or betrayed her, Maria Callas remains forever proud, eternal, and unsurpassed in our hearts. Una diva absoluta!!
