High-yield toners generally have the same size and shape as standard-yield toners but contain more toner powder packed into them. This means that a high-yield toner cartridge prints more pages before needing replacement, resulting in a lower cost per page.

Toners that fall under Lexmark's Return Program are printing toners sold at a reduced price in exchange for the customer's agreement that the cartridges will be used only once and returned only to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. These single-use toners stop functioning when they reach the end of their rated life, as determined by Lexmark (there may be a variable amount of toner remaining in the cartridge when replacement is required). These toners can also automatically update the printer's memory to protect it from non-genuine and unauthorized products.
