The DALI ALTECO C-1 is truly a multi-purpose speaker in both design and function. DALI wanted to ensure that the ALTECO C-1 could be used both as a height speaker and as a traditional stereo speaker.
By designing the crossover for stereo use and maintaining a strict focus on DALI's sound design principles, we created a speaker that meets both criteria. It is the perfect application for adding height information to a surround setup or taking on the role of an off-road stereo speaker.
The ALTECO C-1 provides reliable height information from Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro-3D movies in a surround setup - not only when "firing" using the ceiling as a reflector but also "shooting" from a downward ceiling position.
The ALTECO C-1 can achieve this even without special equalization to enhance effects from HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) technology found in certified Atmos speakers.
Instead, the ALTECO C-1 relies solely on the height processing done in the amplifier when selected. If we had included non-linear HRTF equalization in the ALTECO C-1, it would be impossible to use it as a versatile neutral speaker, limiting its use only to an up-firing type speaker.
Designed the way it is, the DALI ALTECO C-1 offers the best of various worlds, giving you absolute flexibility and numerous applications.

Tremendous speakers that if you set up correctly and adjust properly and your amplifier, then you will get a very good result and the feeling that you are inside what you are watching on television. Dali is an amazing company in terms of the quality of the speakers and sound, and I have not regretted any purchase I have made.
I use them as surround speakers, but they are placed high behind the listening area. It may not be the ideal position (I couldn't place them elsewhere), but they fill the room with detailed and immersive sound (although I had to increase their volume by 8 db through the amplifier). I also have the illusion of height through DTS. The amplifier I use is the Denon AVR-X3500H (excellent!).
I bought the speakers on sale for €245 and I can say the following:
As regular speakers, they produce powerful and clear sound with enough dispersion, but due to their closed design, the bass is nothing special. Of course, these speakers are not meant to be used as basic speakers, but rather as height or Dolby Atmos speakers. That's why I bought them as well.
As Dolby Atmos speakers, placed on top of the main speakers in the specific room I have, even though the ceiling is flat at 2.7 meters, I don't think they provide a clear sound experience coming from above. Perhaps it requires a lot of experimentation to find the right position and angle for the best sound reflection. I also had to increase the speakers to +8 db to hear something coming from the ceiling. However, since I can still partially hear the sound coming directly from the speakers, it ruins the illusion that it's only coming from the ceiling. But in someone else's space and listening position, things might be better.
Now, when I elevated the speakers (I placed them temporarily high on the wall, above the main speakers), they gave a much better result. They are also very powerful speakers and had no problem handling it. The only issue with speakers placed like this is that you can still distinguish that the sound is coming from two speakers and not generally from above. While you gain better sound localization (when, for example, a helicopter passes from left to right, you can actually perceive the direction), you lose the diffusion of sound provided by reflection (if it worked better, that is). Personally, I prefer the Atmos demo with rain, for example, with the speakers placed lower, looking at the ceiling, rather than high up, looking at me.
As regular speakers, they are very good (like all DALI speakers). As Dolby Atmos speakers, if a cheaper Atmos speaker does a good job in the specific room where someone will place it, then the ALTECO speakers will definitely do better.
