The choice of the right grain density depends on how smooth we want to make the surface:

• Smaller numbers, meaning fewer and larger grains per mm2, are ideal for quick leveling of rough surfaces.
• Larger numbers, meaning many and smaller grains per mm2, are ideal for intense sanding and smooth finishing.

Generally, when sanding a surface, we start our sanding with medium grain numbers (e.g. No 80-100) and then sand for more detailed and careful work with larger grain numbers (e.g. No 180-220).
