Description
In 1901, Dimitra Vaka-Brown embarked on a trip to Constantinople, during which she had the opportunity to meet old friends and acquaintances, as well as witness the significant social and political developments taking place in the Ottoman Empire at that time. She documented her experience from this journey in her book "Haremlik" (1909). The author vividly describes the most important incidents that occurred in the Ottoman Empire from the moment her ship approached Constantinople, until the day she was sailing back to the United States. Throughout the narrative, the author frequently interjects evaluative judgments and comments, which bring the text to life and help the reader better understand the descriptions. Her narrative primarily focuses on her interactions with the women of the harem, some of whom were even her childhood friends. In this way, she offers us the opportunity to explore the world of the harem and discover fascinating stories, fateful loves, slaves and eunuchs, as well as beautiful female portraits, skillfully crafted by Dimitra Vaka's pen. How did the women of the harem live? What were their relationships with the other women in the harem, as well as with their husbands? How did they spend their time? What were their dreams, aspirations, and most importantly, how did they perceive their own existence? These questions and many other interesting pieces of information are provided by the author, who, thanks to her unique intelligence, insightfulness, and sharpness, manages to give us much more details than we could hope for.
