5 signal lights indicate the strength of the signal received by the TL-WA854RE from the existing router, which can help you find the right place to position the range extender.
It is recommended to choose a location where there are at least 3 signal LEDs to ensure good performance.

The first time I installed it, everything was fine. Two days later, I didn't have internet, even on two desktop computers, and honestly, I'm still trying to figure out how it managed to do that. The result? I don't use it anymore until I find time to see what is causing the issue

No problem here for 1.5 years, connected it once and haven't had any issues since, and it has good range.

It needs to be unplugged and plugged back in every now and then because it stops connecting to devices, but our phones also need to be restarted occasionally, so why should this be any different?
My house is small so I can't speak for the range, but I have it connected to my cousin's router, one floor below, and it works fine.
P.S. The box says it's the 4th version, but the color of the lights (green) and the design of the packaging seem to indicate that it's version 3.
