The Garmin Varia is a radar that attaches to the back of your bicycle and helps you have better visibility while also making you more noticeable thanks to its light. It connects to the Edge device, another compatible Garmin device, or a compatible smartphone to warn you of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140m away. When used with your compatible smartphone, the Varia app notifies you through vibration alerts and other features.
Specifications are collected from official manufacturer websites. Please verify the specifications before proceeding with your final purchase. If you notice any problem you can report it here.
This wonderful product makes you visible to passing cars and informs you in the best way when they approach. Especially nowadays, when everyone has a phone in hand, being visible as a cyclist is something non-negotiable. And it does it right. I recommend it! I wish it had a better price so that everyone could have it.
I regret not having gotten it sooner. Very strong light and with good autonomy, it can see any vehicle coming faster and even has specific signaling when a vehicle is coming too fast. The only accessory that is worth every last euro.
I would describe it as an integral part of my bike. It is worth 100% of its money and it does what the company describes without any problems. In the first 2 months of use, the battery lasts as the manufacturer says. Finally, I mainly have it connected to my Garmin Fenix 6 watch!
Apart from the positives, one is left astonished with the very bad app of the device.
You cannot see any information about the device other than the basic information if someone is coming from behind you.
Information such as:
- How much battery is left.
- Which lighting mode it is in.
- Event recording - logs.
- Mode selection.
- Deactivation.
etc.
are not provided.
It's really difficult to review when a bike taillight costs 200€. I don't know what to say about this awesome accessory. If you use it, there's no turning back. It's so helpful that I will really be disappointed if I go cycling without it.
On the other hand, it's extremely expensive, no doubt about it. Of course, it's an accessory related to your safety and peace of mind. Going downhill and not hearing anything from behind, but knowing if a car, motorcycle, or even another cyclist is approaching is amazing. Also, when something is approaching from behind, the light creates a different pattern to make you more visible.
The battery is great, very powerful light, and seamless connectivity.
I use it with my phone and the Cadence app, as well as with my Garmin watch.
But man... it's so expensive..
A must-have for anyone who travels on roads with frequent and fast motor vehicle traffic. At a price of 199, it may be enough to consider another option like Magene, but it often goes on sale for 139€ or 149€
I didn't imagine that it would be such a great help, (not in the city though). One beep and you see that a car is coming towards you, long before you hear it, especially if you are over 30mph where the wind makes things difficult. Truly awesome!
Update after 4 months of use. The battery lasted 13.5 hours in flashing mode without showing low battery. It has never disconnected from the Garmin 520, it has warned for ALL vehicles behind me, even carbon bicycles, motorcycles, etc. The light is very bright day/night, it has withstood occasional road water (I don't go out when it's raining, I can't comment on that). 1000% satisfied!
It does its job, meaning you can see cars approaching from far away. It has a very strong light. The only downside is that when you are with others or on a busy road, you cannot easily turn off and turn on the notification sound.
Very good lighting, it looks very good day and night. Its function of flashing at different speeds when a vehicle approaches is very good. But the most useful thing is that it notifies through the Garmin Edge both visually and audibly when a car or motorcycle is approaching, and it accurately displays the number of vehicles. The important thing is that you know that something is approaching at a higher speed than you. Also, its battery life is very good
I have been using it for a few months on a road bike with a connection to Wahoo, with many hours of use per ride (200km). I am very satisfied, it works perfectly. Its connection is generally very good, sometimes it disconnects but reconnects very quickly on its own without any issues. The light is as powerful as it should be. The radar is really valuable. I didn't think it would be so useful, but especially when it's windy, no matter how careful one is, the radar notifies them much earlier. The battery life is very good. I think I can't go for a ride without it anymore.
I have had the Echoto 515 electric mountain bike for a month. On the road, it can easily surpass one car every 100 or maybe even more. The lighting is excellent and the battery life is also great. The integration with my mobile phone is perfect. I will now get one for my wife as well.
