Description
The book presents the complete set of interpretive comments on "Apokopos", based on existing literature. It provides a detailed overview of research from the mid-20th century onwards on the first known popular literary work produced and circulated through the publishing-commercial circuit of Venetian printing houses in the early 16th century (1509).
The introduction focuses mainly on the author and the dating of the work, as the poet is generally unknown, on the printed known or unknown editions and the two surviving manuscripts, and attempts to evaluate the international research effort on the study of "Apokopos". The main part of the book includes introductory comments, sources-reflections, and the interpretive group of verses by researchers. Appendix I presents the tradition of the text (manuscripts and popular editions), while Appendix II includes the entire bibliography.
The study of early popular modern Greek literature, especially Cretan Renaissance literature, accompanied by the creative utilization of contemporary theories (narratology, interpretation, reception), has made remarkable progress in recent years, with independent editions and monographs focusing on different aspects of the works. Of particular interest, regarding the present edition of Cretan "Apokopos", is the organization, by the author, of interpretive comments by verse or group of verses; this is a technique that invites the reader to connect the different parts and engage with interpretive approaches to problematic passages and enigmatic phrases in the text.

Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful?Manual, mainly for students, but also revealing to the non-expert reader the fascinating world of research on the Cretan Apokopos (first printed in 1509). The theme of descent into Hades and conversation with the dead is familiar to the poet, either from Western and Eastern literary production of the Middle Ages, or even from Homer. Bergadis rarely speaks literally, rather he plays with the values of his time, condemning widows, the church, customs, and traditions. It is therefore natural for his interpretation of the text to be multifaceted - judging by the extensive bibliography - and captivating. It is perhaps not coincidental that since 2007, Apokopos has often occupied the minds of theater people. Enjoy reading!
