Patina refers to the thin greenish layer (oxidation) that forms on copper objects as a result of chemical corrosion when they are exposed to air or buried underground.

The term has also been extended to describe the appearance that can be given to metal surfaces through artificial aging processes, mimicking the look of natural oxidation for aesthetic reasons.
