Five stars for their price. Just got them and tried them with an amplifier that reveals everything, so subjectively (always for their category)
Pros:
- Good bass, great range for the 7" woofer
- Very natural mids, the tone is very accurate for vocals. I really liked this for their price category.
- Creates a good stage, I haven't tested it much yet to see the 3D stage
- Relatively good sensitivity for 88.5 db, I expected them to be less sensitive, I think they can be driven from 50W and above.
- Seems very sturdy construction, they look heavier than they actually are.
- Compact speaker, doesn't look very big.
"Cons":
- There is some "confusion" in the placement of instruments in the mids. Maybe it's a bit early and they need some breaking in, the same applies to the highs which need a bit more projection.
- I would like a slightly "warmer" sound, it's too neutral. Compared to another custom speaker I have that uses SB acoustics satori beryllium (of course the satori cost as much as the oberon in total), they sound more "subdued", maybe they also need some breaking in.
Unfortunately, I don't have another speaker in this category to compare it to, and I also don't have a "midrange" amplifier to match it better in terms of price category.
EDIT: after 1 week of use.
- We're talking about a lot of bass, at least with the current amplifier (70W class A). To an absolute degree, I would like it to have a bit more control, but I don't think there is anything better in bass reflex.
- I changed the tweeters with the satori ones. Now I have the world's bass and the world's highs, but I lost a bit of naturalness in vocals. I would like things to be somewhere in the middle...
