Description
"I am not a historian... However, I believe that the first borders of the Greek State, defined by the "Great Powers" on August 30, 1832 with the London Protocol, have a special historical and cultural interest."
It is a narrative, an eleven-day journey on foot, with the approach of historical events that led the hunted great-grandfather near the borders for survival; to finally be attributed the unpleasant quality of "thief". A solitary and experiential narrative and presentation of events in the first person, under the prism of the particular family history.
It includes mainly historical, but also cultural, folklore, mountaineering-hiking, nature-loving, and personal feelings. It starts from the shores of the Pagasitic Gulf in the Bay of Soup, and ends on the shores of the Ambracian Gulf, in Menidi, following an uncharted imaginary border, which the Boundary Commission reached in the mid-1832.
It refers to a not so enlightened period of Greek history, controversial and painful, with heroic but also human aspects. The proceedings of the Boundary Commission, the historical texts and sources cited, attempt to immerse the reader in the atmosphere of the era and the region. In the imagination, moments of banditry are cultivated with the harsh images of the banditocracy. Elements of the effort to establish the newly formed Greek state with the constant involvement and entanglement of the great powers of the era and the dark shadow of the Ottomans.
The endless mountain peaks, forests, streams, and ravines are outlined; sea and mountains, lakes and rivers. Finally, the remnants of the boundary line are depicted with the kasarmas and the koulies - names of another era - the barracks and the prisons, ruins and piles of stones. And all of these today! Descriptions for the hiker, the mountaineer, the nature lover and explorer, the historian, the discerning tourist.
