There are two common issues with Hi-Fi amplifiers. Class A, the traditional choice of listeners, uses a single power supply that operates at full capacity continuously, even when there is no signal. Excellent for reproducing details at low levels, but struggles to provide extreme power when needed.

Class A/B, the most common amplifier category, switches between two internal amplifiers, one for each half of the waveform. Much more efficient but often a recipe for crossover distortion, as the details we desire can be lost in any mismatch during the switching.

Class G is essentially a hybrid amplifier, using Class A specifically for low-level signals, but when required, switches to an additional power supply to drive the larger parts of the waveform.
