I read comments, I read them again, and in the end, I wonder if we have the same machine with some commentators...

So, to the point:
The machine is decent for its price, and the coffee it makes is excellent. Should you find its golden mean? YES. If you don't want to bother at all, go for a machine with capsules (or buy ESE pods that this one supports), and you'll be drinking the same coffee every time without any effort.
However, if you bought this machine to make a proper espresso, here are some tips:
- One basic advantage is its brand and model. And that's because there are many videos on YouTube about its use, and if you want to delve deeper (more information below).
- DO NOT tamp the coffee too much in the basket. It is pressurized, so it creates its own pressure due to the small hole. Fill the basket just enough (only the double one) and tamp it with the plastic accessory, enough for the coffee to be evenly distributed. No need for exaggeration, it's better to tamp it by hand and not on the counter.
- No matter which supermarket coffee I tried, it never got clogged. It only got slightly more pressurized with coffee from Coffee Island cut at 2.0 and below (there's no reason to do it, I just tried it. If you don't ask them for anything, they grind it at 3.0 for you to understand the difference). Of course, I don't tamp it with obsession, as mentioned before.
- Read the MANUAL carefully! I see people saying that they sent it for service because the double shot button was producing a single shot... The buttons are programmable, for heaven's sake...
- The steam wand makes fantastic frothy milk, but it will give you a hard time when cleaning. For that reason, I removed the metal cover/pipe and left only the rubber wand with a tie wrap on its base, otherwise, it might come off and mess everything up (but even this is not a reason to send it for service, remember what I told you about YouTube? I learned it there too). Check the photo to get a better idea.
- Adjust the machine correctly (temperature, water hardness). Personally, I have the temperature set to high and the water hardness set to low (I only use bottled water with low hardness - it's written on each label). Zagori is an honest choice if you don't want to complicate things.
- If you want to delve even deeper, buy a proper burr grinder, a regular tamper, and a non-pressurized basket for the portafilter. This way, you will increase the amount of coffee in the double shot from around 14g to about 18g, which is the standard in most expensive machines (as well as in professional ones). The basket will fit just fine, as long as it's 51mm in internal diameter and you remove the inner plastic, the one that guides the flow. It's a screw and a small matter. No need to cut anything! And if a little coffee comes out of the screw hole, so what? Unless you're making coffee simultaneously in two single cups, then it's okay. In that case, either cut the plastic or switch to another portafilter (non-pressurized portafilter), you'll find endless options for the EC685. Of course, then you enter different paths, going for a hobby or a true, proper espresso. In the photo, you'll see the difference between the baskets, as well as a 51mm tamper.
- Clean your machine very well. And what do I mean by that: After each use, before turning it off, pour some water into a cup and clean the bottom of the head with a cloth. You'll be surprised by what comes out. If you don't mind, put the cloth where the ear hooks of the latch connect, it collects a lot of coffee. Also, remove the basket and rinse it well, as well as the filter from the basket (the one with the rubber attachment that you pull and it comes out). That's the whole issue. It collects coffee residues and easily clogs that small hole. I imagine I don't need to say anything about the steam nozzle, especially without the metal attachment. With proper cleaning, you won't have any difficulties in the future.

- Finally, I bought a plastic mat (jumbo) which I cut and placed under the machine (reduces noise, not that it was much anyway) and where you put the cup (the black piece in the photo), initially because with the vibrations during operation, a light cup can "walk" and secondly because the stainless steel there gets scratched for fun.

I hope I really helped because it is an excellent choice for this price. Enjoy your coffees correctly, especially now that we enjoy them more at home!

I proceeded to purchase this espresso machine, mainly based on the excellent ratings. However, I did not notice that many positive reviews analyze in great detail the ideal size of the coffee grind so that the coffee maker does not clog every time. This, unfortunately, is a SERIOUS FLAW of the coffee maker. Let's admit it. I have experience with 6 espresso machines so far and I have never had problems of this kind. This coffee maker clogs with the illy espresso ground coffee that I have been drinking for years and it drips drop by drop, unless I use much less coffee than I used to, so a diluted coffee comes out, like a French press. And as if that wasn't enough, the double espresso holder holds one and a half measures and still clogs, because this basket, due to its small size especially at the base, has much fewer holes compared to any other coffee maker. This is a manufacturing flaw that cannot be corrected and is not covered by the warranty. There are countless people struggling on the internet and suggesting various hacks. At least it makes perfect frothy milk, allowing me to make latte art designs (attached photo), while having a very good appearance. For latte art type frothy milk, you should completely remove the metal attachment and keep the nozzle slightly submerged below the surface of the milk, while using a special metal jug for frothy milk.

Unfortunately, I will need to point out other flaws. As an 11-month user, I have already taken it for repair once, as a month later, the double espresso button started to dispense the quantity of a single cup. I could not fix the problem myself with a hard reset and the machine had to be reprogrammed by the dealership, which kept the coffee maker for about 2 weeks. However, I read from an annoyed commenter that both I and the dealership had not read the manual properly. He probably knows better. Regarding the aforementioned problem with the fine coffee grinds, it was not resolved, as it is a manufacturing flaw.

Now I had to take it for repair a second time and fortunately the warranty has not expired yet. During the frothy milk preparation, the plastic nozzle was ejected into the small jug with the frothy milk, splashing hot milk all over the place. It swelled like a balloon, and then ... pop! Perfect? The best part is that I will receive the device after a month, as the entire frothy milk production system needs to be replaced (a special order needs to be made).

Now about descaling: The overall process is complicated, lasts about 30 minutes, and requires your continuous presence to switch between flow from the nozzle and flow from the coffee filter. In addition, it splashes all over the counter, as for about 30 minutes it ejects water from the nozzle into a container that you should place underneath and gradually fill with water. If you search on the internet, you will surely find some hacks for this, apart from constantly holding the container with your hand at a specific height, like the friend here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9zvVWZTchg) or constantly wiping your counter with a towel.

In summary, I consider this coffee maker to be one that instead of making coffee for you, needs you to... fix it yourself! To procure the necessary grinder to grind the coffee to the "correct" size, to find the "correct" coffee grinder and the "correct" brand of coffee, not to make the "perfect" coffee for you, but to avoid clogging. You will need to make sure that your cross does not break outside the warranty and have infinite patience and specialized knowledge to adjust to its needs, sometimes even procure a saw or an angle grinder to make your coffee with some patents, but having risked everything regarding the warranty.

23/12/2019
I received the machine today, having now realized how much better a cappuccino an old and much cheaper espresso machine made, which I used in the meantime. And this for the simplest reason that its basket was the right size and shape (it could fit two coffee measures and had enough holes in its base). So I did what so many others do: I cut the plastic cover of the filter holder (initially I removed it completely, but the coffee splattered everywhere while ruining the crema) and put another basket from a broken espresso machine I had, with a diameter of 51mm. And behold: the cappuccino tastes like coffee again, while I won't need to throw it away (for now at least).

22/1/2021
I now use a much better espresso machine (Sage Bambino Plus) and sent this one to work. However, I want to emphasize something very important: The patent with the non-pressurized basket and the supply of a good grinder can be done with any espresso machine on the market. This will greatly upgrade the quality of the coffee, whichever espresso machine you have, as long as you find the right grinding settings (I have a Sage Smart Grinder Pro). So I don't understand why this should be an exclusive feature of this particular machine at the moment you should even cut off its plastic part. Today I tried this exactly on a much cheaper Arielli, without having to ruin any part of it, and indeed the coffee came out much better in taste, better than that of Delonghi. I think the main reasons why this particular coffee maker is so popular are its appearance, some automations, and the fact that it heats up relatively quickly.

22/2/2023
It seems that Delonghi finally recognized the manufacturing flaw with the double basket of the Dedica that only holds 14 grams of coffee and makes it watery. They released their new model that holds 16 grams, but still without a non-pressurized basket. It is the Dedica Arte. There is also the Dedica Maestro, with a non-pressurized basket and many other features that significantly increase its price

Instructions to help. For starters, set high for coffee, low for water (use Zagori) which is low in minerals. Buy a tampered portafilter, aftermarket tamper, precision scale Belogia DST, as well as a coffee distributor. Together with the Adler AD 4450 grinder, 17.5 grams of coffee, ground at 6, the result is perfect. Correct extraction of 35ml in 30 seconds.

After 3 years of daily use and indeed heavy use (it definitely makes 4 coffees a day and usually more), I have to say that for its price, it is the best on the market. We don't buy coffee outside at all, saving a basic daily expense; it's an investment! I haven't made any changes to the portafilter or basket; I have it just as it came from the factory. I might upgrade it at some point, but with the blend I use (Lavazza Rossa), I am satisfied as it is! One very small drawback is that sometimes when you lift it, a little coffee drips from the bottom, but I don't even consider that if someone thinks about its price. If it breaks, I will buy the same one again!

I have been using it for three years (3-5 coffees a day), it makes very good coffee but only coffee. It can't make frothy milk, I have a separate machine for that. It was mentioned somewhere that with decaf, it drips with difficulty. After two years of use, with some decaf, it can't even produce water, that's true. At first, it made it normally. With a German organic decaf that I use, it makes it normally and it's wonderful. Every 6-7 months I do a cleaning with the special liquid from Delonghi for the scale and the noise of the machine is greatly reduced, and you don't need to do anything else for maintenance.

Two machines were purchased, one broke down in three months and after a month of waiting, another one came as a replacement, which makes a lot of noise for some reason. The second one is constantly dripping and with the decaf blends, the water flow is very small, almost dripping, resulting in the coffee not being good.

We got ground coffee for savings on coffee compared to capsules and for the frothy milk. The noise is very low, it makes amazing coffee, you put a little more coffee in its own measuring cup for a perfect result. I get beans from il toto. The frothy milk it makes is simply amazing.

Purchased on Black Friday for €147, replaced another branded machine. This one is class superior, the coffee it produces is much better than many coffees. Tested with Lavazza Oro and Rossa. The preparation of frothy milk is very good and the option for hot milk! The purchase is worth it with closed eyes!

The worst thing I have ever bought. I read the other reviews and was convinced that it was very good. For the money and the difficulty of simply making a coffee at home, it's not worth it. You have to choose the right coffee because it clogs, you have to not press it too much, you have to do this, you have to do that. You spend €200 to make your life easier, but it doesn't.... I do not recommend it and I would not buy it again.

If you are a knowledgeable user, fine, but if you just want to drink a little espresso, then stay away. I will look to sell it.

2 years of daily use and the preparation of countless coffees, it still works excellently. Very good machine, quality and easy to use, clean, and descale. Descaling is needed after a few months depending on the hardness of the water you choose in the settings and is done with the liquid provided by Delonghi (At least that's what I use, which was included in the package and then I order it from Skroutz).

I make frothed milk satisfactorily. I have removed the thick nozzle and left only the rubber one. This way it makes better frothed milk.

And finally, let's get to what is the MOST IMPORTANT. The coffee you choose as well as the grind. I spent a long time, many coffees, and many tests from different varieties, different grinds, different shops until I found the best for me. Generally, the coffees from the supermarket were a waste for me. So I went from coffee roastery to coffee roastery until I found the coffee variety that I enjoy daily whether it is cold or hot.

The best for the money...!!!!! It doesn't make noise like I saw in other comments, at least it seems normal to me, as for the coffee we can say it reaches 90% compared to the outside... besides that it is excellent for making proper coffee, you will need to change some accessories of the machine and adjust it as you want for your coffee... I took ready coffee Hausbrandt, I set the machine for freedo espresso at 35 seconds and 14 grams of coffee in the group for my own standards in plain coffee that I drink, I was speechless, very good machine...!!! It takes a little work to find it, I wasted half a kilo of coffee until I found it to my taste, but it is worth it and more

With a proper grinder, whether electric or manual, you will hardly ever order coffee from outside again. Ideally with a cut-off (it requires a bit of experimentation at first; it’s not something crazy, within a few days you learn exactly what to do and then everything becomes automated and you drink exactly the coffee you want). I have had all of this for over a month now and I have bought coffee from outside once, which didn't impress me either. Clearly, if you go to a serious café with a machine worth thousands of euros, you will drink top coffee, but compared to the vast majority of countless takeaways out there, yours will seem far better because it will be exactly how you want it and without depending on the grind they do at the shop or how well the barista carries out the process. The machine works wonders for its price, with the right equipment, of course. Value for money, very ++ for the long-term investment and, of course, with top results.

If you have basic knowledge, it's a piece of cake! 1-2 videos on YT and you'll make a much better coffee than the capsules and it will be very close to the coffee outside. Very good quality and so far the espresso machine does a great job. The coffee is delicious and there are many accessoires available for the ec685. I love this machine!

I also got the white Delonghi because I like its appearance. I don't regret it; it makes great coffee as long as someone does some testing because to get a good espresso, you need some knowledge... For those who want to buy ready-made espresso powder, you use the factory basket that comes in the package. The very small hole compresses the coffee so that it doesn't run through quickly and the coffee comes out poorly... If someone wants to improve the coffee, they can use a free basket, but be careful, you definitely need a grinder that can grind the coffee to the degree required to come out in the right seconds... It takes some searching, but it's worth it... I use the factory basket, and most of the time I use a free one. For 15 to 16 grams of coffee, the extraction should be between 25 seconds and up to 35, better with 50 grams of coffee in the cup... The result is better than with the factory basket. It's worth it if someone is willing to learn how to make a proper espresso...

Of course I bought it after watching and reading several reviews as well as the reviews here. I definitely agree with most of what has been said. It's honest for its price, no doubt about that, but after two days of having it, I am already expecting an open portafilter. And the main reason is something I haven't seen anyone emphasize. It's not that its basket, even the double, doesn't hold enough coffee, nor that the crema is "artificial," but that to lock the portafilter into the machine, you have to hold the entire device with the other hand as if you are bracing to tighten a shaft from some motorcycle. My wife is not going to do that. And it's not that I might have gotten a defective one because this is the second, since the first had a small..

The coffee maker does its job well, the coffee has an excellent texture. The only downside is the small frother because it is really unstable, it fell from my hand while I was using it, but this means that it fits back into place very easily after washing. Small and compact machine, impressive appearance. It is worth the money it costs.

With 2-3 extra additions like a bottomless portafilter + basket, a grinder, and a tamper, you will be drinking quality coffee at home. Of course, even with the components it already has, the coffee is still good; it's just that these extras will elevate your coffee. The machine heats up very quickly and is relatively quiet. There is nothing negative to write; it is among the top choices available in this budget (it might even surpass more expensive machines, in my opinion)

Now I have two. The first one has lasted 5 years and continues unstoppable. The new one just entered the store and will pay for itself in 6 months as well

2024: I have the 2017 model, maintenance whenever the machine requests it, and it works perfectly and qualitatively.

Clearly 5 stars, I've had it for almost 5 years. Anyone who wants to buy a machine and wants to spend a little money should be patient and get this machine, with a quality coffee it outshines many takeaways. I wouldn't trade it for any other. Try the dinello siena or the capri. Because I read about illy, if you don't press it well, meaning it shouldn't be too tight, it comes out amazing, but I just don't like it.
