Description

In the lowland Thessaly, the renowned maistres, in order to cast spells on those they envied, cooked animal and plant species, impure and inedible. It is said that to gather their herbs, they would run naked every May Day in the fields, and when the moon was full, they would bring it down and milk it like a cow, uttering their magical words and communicating with invisible demonic beings. However, beyond harmful magic, the maistres also knew how to break spells and could heal diseases, acting beneficially for society. Magic, being related to cooking, the quintessential female field of action, constituted knowledge to which men had no access. Magic was mainly practiced by women targeting men, either to win them as husbands or to suppress male dominance. It constituted not only defense-resistance but also a kind of symbolic power within the male-dominated society. And if not all women had access to the field of magic, only the maistres, the field of cooking concerned them all. Cooking in the traditional society of Karagounides, as well as in the broader Greek traditional society, was a female art and socially learned technique that was communicated orally and in person, from generation to generation, from mother to daughter. Women cooked on a daily basis and offered their beneficial meals to the family, visitors, God, as well as at the birth, marriage, and death of each individual.
