The child, often showing low self-esteem, focuses on what their friend, neighbor, or classmate can do rather than what they themselves can achieve. Pipi, the little mouse in our story, wanted to become a bat so he could fly, but when he discovered the new lifestyle he would have to adopt to gain this ability, he was not willing—or perhaps unable by nature—to "pay" the heavy price. To boost the child's self-esteem, we must encourage them to recognize their uniqueness. To think about their special characteristics and abilities, so they realize that none of us is better or worse than the other, just different. Message: "I'm glad to be me! I'm glad you're you! We are all unique!" Feelings: CONFIDENCE * DIVERSITY To ensure children have a healthy social life based on effective relationships, they must cultivate empathy, the ability to put themselves in others' shoes, to understand and feel things the same way another person experiences them. This need is addressed by the illustrated books in this series, which promote emotional intelligence. With the approach suggested for parents and educators, they attempt to initiate children into seeing the world through others' eyes, after first learning to recognize and manage their own emotions. The author: Yolanda Tsoroni-Georgiadis holds degrees from the Law School, the Pedagogical Academy, and the Pedagogical Department of the University of Athens and has further training at the Marasleio Teaching School. She works in public education, writes for educational magazines, is an active member of the Women's Literary Society, and has published many children's books as well as studies on folklore. She is included in the Registry of Trainers for the program "Innovative Actions to Enhance Students' Reading" and has undertaken training work in seminars for Primary Education teachers.
