Anarchy is certainly a psychological, cultural, and historical constant, yet this constant is discontinuous, almost elusive. There is no sequence in Anarchy because it is, by definition, a fountain. Anarchy (or anarchism) is never recognized in the state of affairs. Because of this very fact, it is impossible to think or write a history of Anarchy in the style of a Balzac novel with a beginning, a uniform development, and an end. It is filled with gaps and vertigo. It is made of shreds. Its birth always escapes us. We do not even know if it simply emerges with a dazzling mythical uplift. All we can do is restore its scattered moments and try to measure the fever that runs through it.

This is what the Anarchist Dictionary attempts. To transport its readers, as a printed time machine, into a largely unknown, unseen, or multiply distorted parallel social universe, a multidimensional and multifaceted universe, and thus sufficiently captivating, and to invite them to reconstruct in their own way the anyway spectacular history of anarchy or, at the very least, to read it as a delightful, modular, adventurous, social myth-novel.
