Description

The curated and annotated diary in hand undoubtedly contributes to the historiography of World War I. On one hand, it adds valuable information about the detention period of the Venizelist officers in Verl – an event for which we previously had nothing more than simple references – and on the other hand, it further enriches our knowledge regarding the surrender of Kavala to the Bulgarians in August 1916 and the transfer of the IV Army Corps to Görlitz in Silesia. The Cretan officer of the Gendarmerie, Stylianos Kandylakis, narrates in real-time their capture and captivity, dedicating mostly the diary entries to keep alive against oblivion the political persecutions suffered by the Venizelists from their pro-royalist colleagues on inhospitable ground; the culmination was their months-long imprisonment in Verl, Westphalia, and the harsh conditions of their detention until the moment of their release and return to Greece. Through the diary, aspects of the unprecedented adventure of the soldiers and officers of the IV Army Corps come to life again, which are merely an expression of the National Schism in Greece during World War I.
