Description
In the history of science, as well as in art and politics, there have been and still are cases of people who played an important role and stood out. This book includes a collection of such stories, of people whose journey stood out from the majority.
Some stories concern scientists who are not well known to the general public, and this, as the author states in the introduction, was one of the goals of the book. Stories of notable Greek scientists who are usually ignored are also included.
In education, students are directly taught scientific knowledge and theory. However, what remains outside the respective curricula are the personal stories of these individuals and the way, the process of research that led them to innovative and often "contrary" conclusions to established scientific beliefs, something that reveals that the acquisition of knowledge cannot exist without an open way of thinking.
"... Arno Penzias completed his doctoral thesis in 1961 and was temporarily hired as a radio astronomer at Bell Laboratories. Another radio astronomer, Robert Wilson, arrived at Bell Laboratories in 1963. The two researchers thought of using the "useless" antenna for astronomical observations and turned it into a radio telescope. So, they pointed the antenna towards space to search for signals from the universe. Working in the wavelength of seven centimeters, they detected a weak, persistent, previously unknown signal, which reached the antenna from all directions with the same intensity. At first, they assumed that it might come from the sun, from the noises of New York, or from the antenna itself. One day, as they were trying to locate the origin of the signal, they discovered that the "dish" of the antenna was filled with droppings from the pigeons that lived there. To rule out the possibility of the signal coming from the antenna, they cleaned the droppings and killed the pigeons. Nevertheless, the signal continued to exist. After arduous efforts, after excluding all the above sources, they concluded that the signal originates from the universe..."
