For me, Vassilis Tsitsanis is the greatest Greek composer of our folk music and one of the greatest personalities of Greece in the 20th century. Greater than his students, Manos and Mikis, greater than his predecessors, Markos, Batis, Chatzichristos, and Papazoglou, greater than his contemporaries, Kaldaras, Papaioannou, and others. Because Vassilis Tsitsanis, among other things, was a modernizer half a century ahead of everyone in his art. A modernizer who was not caught in the claws of "the necessary and the beneficial." He traversed the most difficult times of Hellenism in the previous century, Occupation and Civil War. He expressed them critically and galloped away, seeking the new, the fresh, the imaginative, the exotic, but also the just and the common. Truly, this child from Trikala had Prometheus in his guts. And despite the great and sharp loneliness of his life, this spark never extinguished within him.
