Description

Once upon a time, there was an Apple Tree that loved a little boy, very much. This is how one of the most classic illustrated stories begins, written by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree is perhaps the author's most famous work and is available in a collectible edition and a new translation by Angelos Angelidis - Maria Angelidou. It was first published in 1964 by Harper & Row and has been translated into over 30 languages worldwide to date. The story refers to the relationship between an apple tree and a child throughout their lives. When the child is young, he visits the apple tree daily, swings on its branches, and rests in its shade. However, as he grows older, he asks for more and more from it, while spending less and less time with it... Every day the child would visit it, gather its apples, climb its trunk, swing on its branches. And the Apple Tree was happy... As the child grew, he kept asking for more and more, again and again... And the tree gave, gave, and gave... and its heart rejoiced. An allegory with multiple meanings for readers of all ages. The interpretations behind the book Many interpretations have been given over time to this symbolic illustrated story. A fairy tale about the value of selfless friendship? A parable about parental love offered unconditionally and without limits? A metaphor that outlines the relationship between humans and the environment and nature? The classic and beloved book by the –uncompromising for his time– author emotionally touches both young and old, composing a hymn to selflessness, but also constitutes a tender allegory both for life that completes its cycle and for the person who matures, seeing his needs constantly change at every stage of his life.
