This collective volume focuses on the critical period of democratic transition in Greece, which began with the fall of the military dictatorial regime in July 1974. The transition from an authoritarian regime to democracy does not always entail the immediate establishment of democracy. In the case of Greece, however, this transition occurred in a "velvet" and "rapid" manner, laying the foundations for the Third Hellenic Republic. The authors of the volume analyze the institutional reforms, political and social changes, as well as the cultural and intellectual currents that formed the foundation for the construction of the Metapolitefsi. At the same time, they offer their subjective, experiential perspective on the moment of transition and assess the significance of the 1974 shift for literature, the arts, and the broader culture of the Metapolitefsi.
