The blue dwarf fir or blue dwarf spruce is a slow-growing conifer, hemispherical in shape. In the first 10 years, it has a diameter of about 0.5 m. It thrives in areas without much heat and cool soils. It is suitable for rock gardens.
Picea pungens, known as Colorado blue spruce, is a medium to large, narrow, pyramidal conifer with horizontal branching at the ground. It typically grows to a height of 30-60', but can reach 100' or more under natural conditions.
It is native to the central Rocky Mountains from southern Montana and eastern Idaho south to New Mexico, where it grows in moist locations from 6000 to 11000 feet in elevation. The needles are rigid, hairy, and square, with colors ranging from green to blue-green to silver-blue (length 1.5").
The cylindrical light brown cones (up to 4" long) have flexible scales. Trees with blue or silver-blue foliage are generally more sought after than trees with green foliage. The genus name derives from the Latin word pix, meaning "pitch", referring to the sticky resin commonly found in the bark of the fir.
The specific epithet means sharp in relation to the needles. "Glauca Globosa" is a dwarf, globe-shaped shrub with blue needles, evergreen, with a flattened top that will slowly grow to 3-5' in height and 4-6' in width. The blue needles retain their color all year round, but are brighter in the spring.
