Description

This book by Matthew Carmona, a source of knowledge for urban design, consistently tops bibliographic references internationally, as it systematically offers a clear path through the evolving literature on research, theory, and practices of urban design. The concept of urban design is traced back to a continuous process of shaping the place that permeates all scales of urban space, which in turn adapts to the changing global and local contextual framework, as well as the framework of power in urban development. At the core of the book are a total of eight key dimensions of urban design theory and practice - temporal, perceptual, morphological, visual, social, functional - as well as two process dimensions. The latter refer to the governance of urban design - commonly, the role of the public sector in shaping the decision-making framework for urban design, and the production of space - or the development processes through which private and public projects for the built environment become reality. Although it is a classic text of urban design, in its third edition, which is translated into Greek for the first time, the content now refers more to the global scene of urban challenges. It includes all the new issues surrounding the impacts of new technologies, adaptation to climate change, strategies for urban degradation, cultural and social diversity, the value of place, healthy cities, and other issues, accompanied by nearly a thousand carefully selected images and diagrams. The structure is simple, matching its methodical content for the eight dimensions of urban design. The chapters can be read independently but are also interconnected, while the gradual evolution of ideas from dimension to dimension facilitates reading the book from start to finish. • Matthew Carmona is a professor of urban and urban design at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London (UCL). • Haris Christodoulou is an associate professor of urban and urban design at the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
