Literary translations from the establishment of the modern Greek state (1830) until the early 20th century constitute a mirror of dominant aesthetic trends during a period of formation of the cultural identity of the new Hellenism and shape the center of the domestic literary polysystem. Their assessment becomes necessary for the description of the modern Greek literary landscape, due to their dominant presence not only in standalone publications but also in the daily and periodical press in Greece. In the present edition, the recording and commentary of translations of literary texts published in Greek magazines of the 19th century are carried out, revealing the dominant intellectual pursuits of the period. Their indexing, which was carried out at the Center for the Greek Language during the implementation of the program "The Reception of Foreign Literature in 19th Century Greece through Magazines (1831-1900)," is part of a revised approach to literary translations and an attempt at an expanded study of them in the philological research of the reception of foreign literatures in Greece. Through their study, particular aspects of the translation phenomenon are traced, which constitutes a dominant form of channel between Greek literature and foreign literatures throughout the 19th century, while an effort is made to highlight the work of many translators and assess their translation choices, which determined the circulation of ideas in Greece and the reception of foreign works and creators.
