Description

"Knowing this and seeing in many places where I walked, sent by the holy Church of God, and wanting to help as much as I can, I set out and printed this small but very necessary book on this subject for the simple priests, which we printed by question and answer, so that it may be understood with greater ease. It is also necessary for the laity, because it teaches the priests how to confess, and them how to confess, how to examine their conscience, how to prepare when they want to go to their spiritual father, and not to go to the spiritual father at the hour they want to commune."

With these words, the author captures the purpose of the 1630 edition, which is none other than the systematic organization of the method of the Sacrament of Confession. After all, during the period we are examining, several spiritual confessional manuals were printed and circulated, whose authors aimed at the spiritual guidance of the faithful regarding the manner of confession. In these works, the interest is focused on the fact that theology and legalism sometimes conflict and sometimes coexist. However, this particular work, although its content resembles in structure and content the later confessional manuals, aimed at the proselytization of Orthodox Christians through the Sacrament of Confession and their "return" to the Catholic Church.
