Small telephoto lens for portrait and landscape photography. With a silent USM unit. Excellent imaging performance at every aperture. Small, lightweight, and powerful. Length 71.5mm. Close limit 0.85 cm. Filter thread 58 mm. Weight 425g.
A practical and portable telephoto lens
The EF 85mm 1:1.8 USM offers high image quality at all apertures. The circular aperture softens and smooths the background and highlights foreground objects with an attractive background blur. A rigid front element allows the use of special filters, such as polarizing or color filters.
High Aperture 1:1.8
The high aperture of 1:1.8 allows for taking photos without a tripod and flash, even in low light, and enables targeted depth of field control for creative effects.
Condensed Perspectives in Portrait Photography
The short telephoto focal length of the lens slightly compresses perspectives, which slightly reduces the size of the visible areas of the face and thus improves the overall impression.
Ultrasonic Focusing
A ring-shaped ultrasonic motor ensures very fast and extremely quiet adjustment movement. Thanks to the excellent holding torque, inaccuracies are avoided. Additionally, manual focus is possible at any time without switching. This means that focus can be adjusted without needing to disable the AF function.
Super Spectra Coating
The Super Spectra coating ensures excellent color balance and enhanced contrast. It also minimizes lens flare and ghosting - a common problem caused by light reflecting off the camera sensor.
Full integration of the camera's E-TTL II flash control
The lens sends distance information to the E-TTL II flash controller of a compatible EOS camera, ensuring optimal flash exposure in every shooting situation

Initially, I put it on a 7DMK2 crop body and I wasn't impressed. For the past 1.5 years, I've been using it on the EOS R and I can say that it is the best lens I have tried. Besides the incredibly fast and accurate focus, the image quality is unbelievable. Detail, bokeh, and colors are amazing. Considering that the lens was designed by CANON about 20 years ago, we are talking about a small "gem". Finally, its price is such that any enthusiast can have it in their bag.
Awesome lens for portraits! Very sharp with great resolution! Very good quality-price ratio. It doesn't distort the features of the subject you're photographing. I recommend it!
Good cheap quality lens .. good focus and very detailed below f2.8 .... sharper than the two 50mm lenses I have (1.8 stm 2.5macro) from 2.8 and below approximately at the same levels as the sigma 85mm lenses even though they open up to f1.4.. and their bokeh is buttery...
-Fast and accurate autofocus!
-Lightweight
-Compact size
-Very good build quality
-Quiet (for those who are interested)
I use it on both full frame and crop bodies, in low light conditions, comfortably. The 1.8 aperture helps a lot! The quality of the photos is excellent!
A lens mainly for portraits, that a professional photographer must have! Simply fantastic! Fast in focusing, crisp image and more compact than the f1.2..!
Every serious manufacturer of photographic systems designs and produces lenses that stand out from all others for their exceptional performance in optical terms. Usually, these lenses cost a small fortune. However, rarely, and in moments of great inspiration, some manufacturers offer lenses of exceptional performance that have an excellent cost-quality-performance ratio.
One of these is undoubtedly the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM.
A favorite portrait lens for many photographers working with the Canon system, it performs exceptionally well in tests and evaluations, even from the most demanding print and photography equipment review websites.
It is worth mentioning that its compact dimensions and light weight are another significant advantage, especially when considering its high brightness (f/1.8) and its compatibility with all Canon EOS bodies (full frame and/or APS-C).
Conclusion: The EF 85mm f/1.8 is a lens that should and can (due to its cost and size) be a part of the bag of any demanding photographer who belongs to the Canon camp and has high expectations, both at an amateur and professional level.
