The Letters, from which excerpts have been taken, were written during the official residence of Philip James Green as Consul in Morea or Zakynthos in correspondence maintained with the mighty Great Britain during the period of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Some of them are written by himself and some others by his brother, the vice-consul R. L. Green. The information comes either from the personal direct observation of Philip James Green, who often intervened to the detriment of the Greeks, or from the official correspondence of the English consular agents in various parts of Morea. It is true that I began translating the book at hand with some skepticism, knowing the criticism that had been leveled by others, both foreign and not only, authors. Nevertheless, 1821 does not fear narration, from whichever side it comes. The subsequent flow of events to this day proceeds with the necessary corrections, self-purification, and self-control. [Mihail E. Papaioannou, translator]
