Ibsen wrote his last social drama in 1882, during his stay in Rome. While Europe is shaken by significant political events, the playwright turns his gaze to the enclosed Norwegian society.
The hero of the drama is Dr. Thomas Stockmann, who speaks out against the Administration of a spa town in southern Norway. The waters of the spa have been contaminated, but the Administration stubbornly refuses to address their purification since the costs would be exorbitant. The doctor takes the matter into his own hands and calls his fellow citizens to a protest gathering. However, his speech provokes the anger of those present and, ultimately, the revolutionary Stockmann ends up becoming "an enemy of the people."
The work is presented in a translation by Margarita Melberg. The volume also includes an extensive afterword, written specifically for this edition by Anna Stavrakopoulou, Professor of Theatre Studies at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as a timeline of the life and work of the great Norwegian playwright.
An Enemy of the People continues to provoke interest and awaken consciences. It shakes the stagnant waters of society and puts pressing issues of today on the table. Notable 21st-century performances in Greece that refer to the present include a production by a group of young creators, graduates of AUTH, titled Ibsen Mine: An Enemy of the People Meets the People, in the meeting room of the Thessaloniki City Hall. Also, in 2023, an event was held in the courtyard of the old municipal school of Kallirroi featuring residents of the village, members of the local struggle committee.
