Beta-alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, or otherwise a non-essential amino acid. It is synthesized in the liver and can be obtained through the diet from animal-derived foods, such as beef and chicken.
Once ingested, beta-alanine combines with histidine within skeletal muscles and other organs to form carnosine. Carnosine is then stored in the skeletal muscles.
Carnosine reduces the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles during exercise, which contributes to improved athletic performance. Beta-alanine enhances athletic performance by reducing fatigue, increasing endurance, and enhancing physical performance in high-intensity exercises.
Studies show that beta-alanine contributes to increasing the time to exhaustion – that is, the time from the start of physical exercise until the body's exhaustion (TTE). This practically means that it helps you exercise for longer periods in each workout.
For this reason, beta-alanine particularly aids performance during short-duration high-intensity exercises, which last from one to several minutes.
