For the Neoplatonic philosophers, systematic engagement with mathematics was a fundamental prerequisite for a deeper understanding of philosophy. In this context, the mathematical sciences (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music) became an integral part of the educational program of the School of Athens during Late Antiquity, where Domninus from Larissa of Syria studied. Sources describe Domninus as particularly skilled in mathematics. But what remains of his work? This book attempts to provide an answer to this question. Starting with a presentation of the historical and cultural context in which Domninus lived, the study initially examines the available biographical details about Domninus and then focuses on three significant mathematical texts of Late Antiquity attributed to him: the Handbook of the "Introduction to Arithmetic," How a Ratio is Extracted from Another Ratio, and the Commentaries on Nicomachus. The book is aimed at readers seeking, on the one hand, an introductory manual on the historical and philosophical context of mathematics in Late Antiquity and, on the other hand, an engagement with the original texts themselves and their commentary.
