Description
For a year, Ibsen pondered in his mind the theme of A Doll's House. During this time, as was his habit, he gradually built, piece by piece, the characters, illuminated them from various angles, sought the reactions that suited them best, and the words that distinctly and definitively characterized them. When the time came to compose his material, he remembered being told about an old monastery, converted into a hotel, near Amalfi. He left Rome and withdrew there. It would take him four months and a bit to write A Doll's House from the draft to the final text. And in these four months, Ibsen would establish, albeit with some instabilities or regressions to some old methods, the new form of dramatic work, the "Ibsenian." Angelos Terzakis
