Venom was created by David Michelinie, Mike Zeck, and Todd McFarlane in 1984, as an alien creature known as the Klyntar Symbiote. It first appeared in the limited series Secret Wars with the iconic black suit of Spider-Man, unaware that he was wearing a living entity. The suit enhanced the hero's powers, but also his aggressiveness. When he discovered the truth, the hero detached from the creature, which ended up merging with Eddie Brock, a failed journalist who hated Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

Brock's origin as Venom occurred in 1988, and since then he has become one of the worst enemies of the spider-like hero while sometimes acting as a vigilant anti-hero.
