As Green Lantern, Hal Jordan served the Guardians of the Universe and saved existence from great threats many times. However, when he was unable to save his home, Coast City, from destruction because he was off-world, he was devastated. He flew directly to Oa, the planet of the Guardians, and sought their help to resurrect Coast City. When the Guardians refused, Hal absorbed the energy of the Central Power Battery of Oa, along with Parallax, a yellow entity created from living fear that had been imprisoned in the battery for millennia. Parallax then drove Hal to madness and fueled him to annihilate the entire corps of Green Lanterns!
