Description

The Intel Xeon E-2478 is a processor for servers/workstations with 8 cores. It is part of the Xeon E series, which uses the Raptor Lake architecture with Socket 1700. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading, the number of cores is essentially doubled to 16 threads. The Xeon E-2478 features 24 MB L3 cache and operates at 2.8 GHz by default, but can be boosted up to 5.2 GHz depending on the workload. Intel manufactures the Xeon E-2478 on a 10 nm production node, the number of transistors is unknown. The multiplier is locked on the Xeon E-2478, which limits overclocking capabilities.

With a TDP of 65 W, the Xeon E-2478 consumes typical power levels for a modern computer. Intel's processor supports DDR5 memory with a dual-channel interface. The highest officially supported memory speed is 4800 MT/s, but with overclocking (and the right memory modules), you can reach even higher. ECC memory is also supported, which is an important feature for critical systems to avoid data corruption. For communication with other system components, the Xeon E-2468 uses a PCI-Express Gen 5 connection. This processor does not have integrated graphics, so you may need a graphics card.

Hardware virtualization is available on the Xeon E-2478, which significantly improves the performance of virtual machines. Additionally, IOMMU virtualization (PCI passthrough) is supported, allowing guest virtual machines to directly use the host's hardware. Programs that use Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) can run on this processor, enhancing performance for compute-intensive applications. Besides AVX, Intel also includes the newer AVX2 standard, but not AVX-512.
