It is a good and useful device if you are in a Unifi environment, it is. Its usefulness lies in the fact that if you have Unifi equipment (APs, switches, etc.), you can configure many things in a relatively simple and unified way. The positives end here for me, as I bought it for the above reason for office use, to replace an Edgerouter X which I was very satisfied with, and with which I did load balancing on 2 WAN connections.
And the UCG can do load balancing, but at a very basic level, specifically it does not maintain session stickiness, so while you are on a video call, if it detects traffic on the WAN interface where the call started, it may decide to switch you to another WAN and drop you. A feature that is taken for granted on the Edgerouter, even on OpenWRT, is simply stated as not supported here, and in support they tell you to create a policy to route specific traffic only from a specific WAN.
For me, it lost one star just for that.
Oh, and it also frustrated me a bit to set it up and migrate the settings. I mean, if I didn't have a Unifi Account, to authenticate it and transfer the settings I wanted via the cloud, it simply couldn't be done.
But this is Ubiquiti in this category of equipment, take it or leave it...
The little device is aimed at slightly advanced users. That is, you need to engage with it to set it up correctly. Of course, it is much easier than the previous generation from the same company, meaning you can configure it without any access to the console via CLI. In general, it is much more user-friendly, but not plug and play. However, it opens up a whole new world regarding the management of your network. Ideally, it combines well with the rest of the Ubiquity ecosystem. I manage the Starling network in bridge mode, and everything runs absolutely smoothly (5 VLANs, 6 Wi-Fi networks, 6 Ubiquity APs, and mesh). Generally, you forget that it exists if you install it correctly
A small dream machine that does it all and is cost-effective. It does not disappoint in a home with considerable demands and for small offices.
I have set it up for home and manage 4 VLANs, and it is even responsible for sharing and the rules via nanobeam on a PtP link of 5 kilometers...generally, it can handle everything from very simple to very complex!
