Description

From the introduction by Stavros Zouboulakis: The multiple recognition abroad of Nikos Kazantzakis has been a key factor in changing our own attitude towards him, which has been observed in recent years. Serious studies on his work by both older and newer scholars are indeed increasing continuously in our country. In the context of this change in attitude among philologists, historians of ideas, and critics towards Kazantzakis, it was decided to publish a collective volume dedicated exclusively to the ideological coordinates of his work.

This volume explores questions such as: What was the thought of this thinker? What were the central and stable axes of his thinking? Was he a Nietzschean nihilist, a Bergsonian, a Marxist? Was he an atheist, a Christian, a Buddhist? A communist, a socialist, a nationalist, a fascist, a racist? A supporter of Venizelos but also of Dragoumis' ideas? Behind all these ideological changes, is there a stable spiritual trait? Is there any unifying element?

His relationship with Judaism and, in particular, with the Zionist movement, as well as his attitude towards women and sexuality, are also significant topics. How well did he know the works of the thinkers he acknowledged as his inspirations? To what extent should we take literally, regarding the topics in discussion, his spiritual autobiography, Report to Greco?
