Vitamin B12 and the syndrome caused by its deficiency (pernicious anemia) have been recognized and described since 1855. It is an intensely red crystalline compound due to its high cobalt content. Vitamin B12 works with folic acid in many cases, such as in the synthesis of DNA, red blood cells, and the myelin sheath around nerve cells.
Possible Applications/Indications:
Pernicious anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency result in weakened nerve function, causing sluggishness, numbness, or a burning sensation. It also weakens brain function and leads to dysfunction of the central nervous system.
Anxiety/Depression: Nervousness and anxiety are often associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. Especially in the elderly, vitamin B12 deficiency often causes depression.
Hyperhomocysteinemia: Approximately 20-40% of patients with heart disease have elevated levels of homocysteinemia, which significantly contributes to atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
Diabetic neuropathy: Vitamin B12 is successfully used in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, although it is still not entirely clear whether the treatment is due to the intake of sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 or the regulation of its metabolism, which is significantly disrupted in diabetics.
Male infertility: As vitamin B12 is involved in cell replication, its deficiency naturally has significant effects on the quality, quantity, and motility of sperm.
Tinnitus: A significant number of patients with tinnitus or hearing loss due to prolonged noise exposure have a vitamin B12 deficiency. This is due to changes in the neurological function of the auditory system.
Sleep disorders: Vitamin B12 affects melatonin secretion. Very often, low melatonin levels are due to low levels of vitamin B12 in the human body.
