Description

The AMD Epyc 74F3 is a processor for servers/workstations with 24 cores, set to be released in March 2021, with an MSRP of $2,900. It is part of the EPYC series, which utilizes the Zen 3 (Milan) architecture with Socket SP3. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), the number of cores effectively doubles to 48 threads.

To further increase the overall system performance, up to two CPU Epyc 74F3 can be connected in a multi-processor (SMP) configuration. The Epyc 74F3 features 256 MB of L3 cache and operates at 2.8 GHz by default, but can be boosted up to 4 GHz depending on the workload. AMD manufactures the Epyc 74F3 using a 7 nm production process, utilizing 33.2 billion transistors. The silicon die of the chip is not manufactured by AMD, but by TSMC foundry. The multiplier is locked on the Epyc 74F3, limiting overclocking capabilities.

With a TDP of 240 W, the Epyc 74F3 is extremely power-hungry, which means you need top-notch cooling. The AMD processor supports DDR4 memory with an eight-channel interface. The highest officially supported memory speed is 3200 MT/s, but with overclocking (and the right memory modules) you can go even higher. ECC memory is also supported, which is an important feature for critical systems to avoid data corruption. For communication with other system components, the Epyc 74F3 uses PCI-Express Gen 4 connection. This processor does not have integrated graphics, so you may need a graphics card.

Hardware virtualization is available on the Epyc 74F3, which significantly improves the performance of virtual machines. In addition, IOMMU virtualization (PCI passthrough) is supported, allowing the virtual machines of the hosts to directly use the hardware of the central computer. Programs that use Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) will run on this processor, enhancing performance for compute-intensive applications. In addition to AVX, AMD includes the newer AVX2 standard, but not AVX-512.
