A watch that screams 90's, those who grew up in that decade will definitely feel familiar with it.
8204 mechanism with a power reserve of 44 hours and mine is running at +14 seconds/day.
Sturdy, well-made, and beautiful.
Personally, I have the version with the Miyota 8204 Caliber and the strap without the No Decompression Limits, and it looks like a war dog! However, I haven't had it for very long, so I can't give a more detailed opinion about its timing, so trust other comments :P
As for its history, although it is Japanese-made, this particular series was used by the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) for a continuous decade, and it was found to withstand depths of up to 500 meters (even though it says 200m for safety). So, as you can understand, it adds a particularly logical consumer persuasion, beyond its beautiful design, which also increases its demand.
At the same time, it can be compared to watches of higher value (; such as Seiko SKX, etc.) from which it has absolutely nothing to envy!
The only negative thing I could find so far is that the lume (although beautiful) doesn't last as long compared to other watches in the same category and price range (such as Orient Ray II, etc.), but I don't find it particularly concerning.
We are talking about the model ny0040 and some other details. This is the well-known watch that the marina militare (Italian divers) had for a decade. Let's get to the point and leave the history behind. The watch, whether with a bracelet or a rubber strap, is ideal for swimming/diving, etc. that involve water. All commercial products start to smell after a while. The glass scratches easily, so be careful or wear gloves during agricultural work. As for its timekeeping, it loses minutes +- every week, I'll laugh at you. At first, it would get moisture inside because I didn't screw the crown. After that, everything was fine! If you're thinking of a classic everyday watch that tells the time and date, with an automatic kinetic movement (with its drawbacks), it's a good investment at €170. I've been wearing it since last December, almost a year now, and I constantly use it for my agricultural work with chainsaws/trimmers. At first, I was afraid of the vibrations affecting the automatic system, but so far it's been working well! If your requirements are higher, go for a smartwatch. But before you buy it, take a look at Casio's gshock watches, I'm talking about a tough watch, not a fancy one.
I bought it in May 2001, today I came back from vacation wearing it. It is the cheapest of my watches, but if a zombie apocalypse happened tomorrow, this is what I would take with me.
The mechanism is very accurate, sturdy, and operates smoothly for its category. The case gets scratched and dented, the glass gets scratched if hit, the bezel leaves marks, generally it is not more durable than a similar watch. The secret is the mechanism, which is very reliable, and the fact that you can easily find spare parts for everything, as it is very long-lasting and a successful model. I have sent it for preventive service twice so far.
Completely waterproof and reliable, it accepts a variety of straps that can change its appearance and make it suitable for any occasion - wear it with a bracelet first and then put on any strap you want. Its diameter is the regular-to-large 42mm, but it looks much smaller on the wrist, personally, I feel it as a 39-40mm.
If you are into watches, then you know the NY00xx or you already have it. If you are not into watches, buy it and be sure that you have an exceptional watch at an incredible price, which will stay with you forever.
I have had this watch for 1 year, it is perhaps the most reliable Citizen watch, beautiful with a wonderful lume for the night, automatic like all others. It loses a little time, for me it is at +3 seconds per day, but it is worth its money and more
I have had it for two years. I have changed once the part that rotates to change the time and date because it had completely come off and recently the days have started not to change or change, so they remember. Since I got it, it loses 5 minutes in 3 weeks, and I found others with this watch and the same problem. Overall, it is comfortable and beautiful for simple everyday use, but at least for me, it is problematic
I bought it from Italy for 230€ with free shipping.
In Greece, the full lume model doesn't exist, whoever sells it imports it from abroad and usually asks for over 250€.
The watch is very beautiful for a diver watch, usually most of them are very bulky, which I don't like.
The lume is extremely bright, the strap is soft and flexible, the hands are readable.
A negative aspect is that I consider the bezel to be a bit loose.
Overall, the watch is very good, tested for many years, it has proven its worth and durability.
I have it in my small collection, along with the excellent Orient Mako. Both are excellent for diving. Not particularly accurate in time, as it is automatic after all. Buy one, it is sold at a good price and worth it.
The watch is not just a simple one. It is worn every day and everywhere, from a shipyard to a coffee shop. It is super lightweight, durable, I simply love it. It has served me well until the last euro.
The history of the watch speaks for itself.
Those who have researched it a bit know who used it for ten consecutive years.
So undoubtedly it withstands any hardship, something I have already observed.
Readable, lightweight, with very good lume, just as it appears in the photos.
With very good timing, perhaps better than expected for an automatic watch.
The strap is very high-quality, skin-friendly, with the no decompression limits printed on it.
Something that impressed me, it glows at any time of the night, even if I hadn't exposed it to light for several hours.
Although I have a weakness for G Shock watches, I fell in love with this Citizen watch as soon as I saw it. It has been tested under high pressure and is worth its money. The black dial is amazing, as it even helps illuminate in low light. It has been produced since 1997. I have only had it for a short time, but I never take it off. It's worth someone's while to do some research to verify the quality. I hope I helped.
The best watch I've ever had!!!! I've had it for about 7 years. It is excellent for everyday use and more! It is resistant to impacts (it doesn't get damaged). It is fully waterproof. Sturdy construction. Excellent strap, in the 7 years that I wear it daily, it hasn't suffered any damage! Of course, like all automatic watches, it has a loss of about -5 minutes per week. I highly recommend it!!!!!! I wouldn't change it for anything!!!!!!
Excellent watch for divers and not only. Wonderful classic piece in all aspects, dimensions, reliable automatic mechanism with a clear and readable dial. I have had it since 2003, in a short time it will be twenty years and it is always with me as a faithful companion in the passage of time, every day showing you the time that passes in our lives...
Owner for 7+ years, it's worth its money, it's a very good watch. The only negative is that it loses a little time and may need to be adjusted once a month or so. But for this price and being automatic, it's absolutely reasonable.
Very good historical piece but for this money you can find the top-notch Orient RA-AA0006L19B Automatic Historical Watch with scratch-resistant crystal, which I recently acquired for 160 euros. I have both and the Orient wins in terms of points and loses slightly as an automatic mechanism
A classic diving watch from CITIZEN with certified waterproofing ISO 6425. Very beautiful up close and fits perfectly on small wrists! The strap, although plastic, is of very high quality rubber. The only negative thing that I didn't like is the rotating bezel, which feels during its rotation that it is not as well mounted on the watch and gives you the impression of a cheap watch!
Purchased in October 1998, they say it's a monofin, incredible durability not only in the sea, due to work it has been bathed many times in grease, oil, has eaten incredible amounts of dirt plus the ones from diving.... Value for money for sure, now how it fits in everyone's hand is purely subjective, but it's worth every last euro and definitely, as a friend mentioned above, one of the best phosphoric dials on a watch. That's it and I hope I helped.
I bought it a year ago, I sent it twice to the dealership, the first time it went 5 minutes ahead per week, they sent it back to me and then it started losing time, so I sold it and relaxed.
Very good, classic watch. It has been available since 1997 and used to be the official watch of the Marina Militare.
Its timing is average, it's a matter of luck how accurate it will be for you. In terms of construction, it is quite good, just be careful with the glass, which is not sapphire and can get scratched.
At around €200, the only serious competition (for a certified diver with an automatic movement) is the Seiko SKX, which in my opinion is slightly better.
I have it in blue dial... Very beautiful, the crown is in the opposite position, apart from making it unique, I like it a lot because it doesn't "poke" my wrist like regular watches.
It is a watch that if you don't want the absolute accuracy of a g-shock, you get it and you never take it off your hand no matter what work you do, it doesn't mind anything...
A legend that has proven its worth, for 10 years it was the official watch of the Italian Special Sea Forces, who, among other things, tested it at 500 meters and nothing happened!
I prefer it with a bracelet, I have tried it with many straps (NATO, ZULU, etc.) but in my eye and on my hand, they don't suit me...
Truly bombproof!
A detailed review here:
I have had the watch for 15 years! With heavy use, and it is like new! I use it in the sea and for diving. I chose it automatic because it never needs to be opened, so it doesn't lose its waterproofness. It doesn't lose a second. It glows very well in the dark. Citizen used top materials (even in the strap). It is inherited to the next generation!
I have it since 2015, it accompanies me every day in whatever I do, work, sports, walks, events. It stands firmly on my wrist and challenges me. I have it with me everywhere and always in any activity, and it has never let me down. It is a rugged, waterproof watch, resistant to 20 atmospheres, self-winding. It doesn't lose time (I have monitored it with my phone), and if the chronograph loses any time, it is negligible. The only thing it has shown is some light scratches, perfectly normal after 7 years of daily use.
For its price, it is excellent with very good timing. The plus side is that it not only automatically winds, but also manually winds from the crown. The best thing I have seen is the lume (phosphorescence) at night.
