The oilcloth is intended to gently absorb oil and myrrh from the child's body. Therefore, they must be made of high-quality cotton. A set of christening oilcloths includes the oilcloth, the towel, the small towel, and the underwear that comes into direct contact with the child.

Cleaning the oilcloths after the ceremony is a small ritual, as according to tradition the godmother along with the mother must rinse it 3 times in the sea or river. The purpose is not to make them spotlessly clean but to retain the scent of myrrh & oil from the ceremony.

You should know that the holy myrrh used in the baptism is prepared every ten years in Fanari by the Patriarch.

Advice for storing the oilcloths: "wrap in clothing preservation paper along with white Marseille soap. This way, the oilcloths will smell like soap and myrrh".
