Deleuze writes about the arts not as a critic but as a philosopher and insists that his texts should be read as philosophical works, in the most classical sense of the term. He extracts concepts from the literary works he examines, as well as from the connections he identifies between philosophy, literature, and the other arts.

Critical and Clinical is not a simple collection of articles, even though most of the essays are dedicated to individual authors. Deleuze develops in them a series of concepts like patterns that appear and reappear, and indeed are connected in increasingly complex contrasting relationships, so as to find a place in a logic of literature that is simultaneously the logic of life.
