It is truly something exceptional, especially when considering what else we can find at this price. Even from a 5-star Metaxa, we wouldn't get this strong alcohol sensation, and that alone makes it worth every penny.
I'm not sure exactly what the 5 stars mean - even if it's not 5 years old (which is probably close), it feels very close to the brands it is. It is smooth, light, I would say summery - on the nose, herbs, grapes, honey, on the palate, sweetness, orange, moving towards other yellow fruits like apricots, peaches, and on the finish, a noticeable reddish hue.
Below is a nice comment talking about the production process, to which we can add that Metaxa is made with a brandy base primarily sourced (about 80%) from Spain and Italy, with the rest being distillate from Greek varieties (Savatiano, Sultanina). This base of the spirit ages for a year in French Limousin oak barrels, then it is blended with aged sweet wines from Samos. Metaxa now has its own vineyards in the center of the island for this purpose, and then it ages for additional years in French oak barrels. In the end, a secret blend of herbs is added, and depending on the stars, it ages even more.
Metaxa has been owned by Remy Cointreau for a long time, but it continues to be produced and provides job opportunities in our country, remaining a quintessentially "ours" distillate. The idea of blending with aged wine works, and to find this smoothness and bouquet in another drink, we would have to go up to a different price category.

Metaxa is not made from wheat (whiskey-vodka), it is not made from herbs (gin), it is not made from sugarcane (rum), it is not made from agave (tequila).
Metaxa is made from a blend of aged wines from select grape varieties, which are combined with exceptionally sweet muscat wines from Lemnos and Samos, and then flavored with a secret blend of herbs.
The taste and aftertaste it leaves you with are incredible.
Even the highest quality and most expensive whiskies pale in comparison.
They are even better than "good" French cognacs (Hennessy, Courvoisier).
Do you want something affordable with a strong flavor? Get the 3-star.
Do you want something with a gentle taste of fruits, flowers, vanilla? Choose the 5-star.
Do you want something like the 5-star, but with a more "sophisticated" flavor and a longer aftertaste? Try the 7-star.
Do you like the taste of coffee, smoky wood (not me), dried fruits? You are a fan of the 12-star.
Do you prefer very aged spirits? Try the private reserve, aged for 30 years and producing unique flavors.

The secret...
a) The 3-star requires 4-6 ml of honey or carob honey dissolved in 100ml of boiling water per liter to elevate it and lose its bitterness.
b) The 5-star requires a little dilution (half a shot of water in 100ml) where you do not lose the taste or the alcohol and it softens it.From 7 and above, the flavors change.
After hours and hours of work, METAXA is the only thing that relaxes you. Those who drink whiskey simply do not understand that METAXA has 100000000 times more aroma.
PS IT IS NOT BRANDY NOR COGNAC. It is something unique.

2021-05-25Expert userThey say that the drinks you use in infusions don't matter if they are 2, 3 stars or even mineral oils.
But the truth is that if you drink a bottle of 3-star Metaxa and then a bottle of 5-star Metaxa, in a Hot Grog, you will notice very intense quality differences.
1. It is not so bitter. Its taste is smooth and fragrant.
2. It doesn't need almost any spices.
It elevates the tea.
For the record, I use Dilmah black.
Its category is not the one that the price suggests. The equivalents of 15-16 euros that the cellars sell are more 3-star than the 3-star.
The reason I don't give it 5 stars is because in my opinion, it lacks a basic characteristic that the 3-star has. The 3-star is stronger in alcohol content. If you drink cognac and whiskey, you can understand this difference even when in theory it is only 4%.
