As marsupials, baby kangaroos (joeys) stay in their mother's pouch for up to 200 days before they can venture out into the world on their own. Red kangaroos can be found almost anywhere in Australia, except for the far east, north, and southwest of the continent. In these areas, you are more likely to encounter antilopine, eastern grey, or western grey kangaroos.

All kangaroo species are classified as "least concern," and the animal has thrived where many other marsupials have unfortunately suffered. The kangaroo is a highly recognizable symbol of Australia and appears on the country's coat of arms.

Although kangaroos may attack if provoked, they are generally quite shy and harmless to humans. However, they should be treated with respect, as their hind legs can deliver a powerful kick and their claws can cause injury.
