Greek bay laurel is a fragrant plant of the laurel family (Lauraceae) and belongs to the genus Laurus nobilis (noble laurel). The bay laurel originates from Asia Minor. It is an evergreen shrub with dark green, hard, leathery, and aromatic leaves, and the flowers are pale yellow.
Historical references
According to myth, Daphne was the daughter of the river Peneus. She rejected all her suitors, even the god Apollo, as she had sworn an oath of purity. Mother Earth protected her by transforming her into the well-known plant. The plant was dedicated to the god Apollo. Homer associates the bay laurel with glory, superiority, and power, and for this reason, it was preserved as a prize for the winners of the Olympic Games.
Culinary use
Bay leaves are a favorite herb in Greek traditional cuisine thanks to the unique aroma they provide to dishes. They are used in soups by infusion, mainly in tomato sauces such as lentils and bean soup. They are also used to flavor red meats, poultry, and seafood.
