DragonFly Series USB DAC + Headphone Amplifier + Amplifier
The DragonFly Black, the most affordable model of the award-winning DragonFly family, has been praised as the "essential hi-fi product for everyone." Its more advanced sibling, the DragonFly Red, combines significantly improved performance at an affordable price. The ESS 9010 DAC chip in the Black version and the higher-performing 9016 chip in the Red version utilize minimal spectral filters for detailed natural sound.
The DragonFly Black version features a quality headphone amplifier and analog volume control, while the Red version includes a more advanced ESS amplifier and digital volume control, offering a unique blend of power and musicality. The DragonFly Black produces 1.2 volts - enough power to successfully drive all preamps and a wide range of headphones. With a higher output of 2.1 volts, the DragonFly Red is compatible with a greater variety of headphones, including low-power models.
The DragonFly Cobalt, our new flagship DAC, delivers everything music lovers expect from the DragonFly family, with beautiful, natural sound. It also features a 2.1-volt output, uses digital control for excellent signal-to-noise ratio, ensures perfect compatibility with Apple and Android devices, and is an excellent and reliable MQA playback device.
The performance of the Cobalt model comes from significant enhancements: ESS ES9038Q2M DAC and improved power supply filtering for increased immunity to WiFi, Bluetooth, and mobile device noise. It also includes a Dragon Tail adapter with USB-A to USB-C connections.
Collaboration with Gordon Rankin continues, utilizing USB StreamLength ® code for asynchronous transfer. Gordon's monoClock ® technology allows the DragonFly Cobalt to provide higher resolution and clarity than multiple clocked DACs.
The Cobalt uses the top-tier ESS chip, the ES9038Q2M DAC, with a slow roll-off filter for natural and expressive sound that is always emotionally engaging. In the Cobalt model, noise reduction is enhanced through carefully designed power source filtering.
All DACs at this price are a significant upgrade from your mobile's DAC (unless you have an LG) and your computer's DAC, of course it also depends on your headphones/speakers. The RED is a better value than the COBALT since you will definitely upgrade to a more expensive and better DAC after seeing the difference compared to a computer's DAC. Excellent to start your journey into high-end sound. I had it with the meze 99 classics and enjoyed it very much.
It is a definite upgrade from your mobile's DAC.
Very good first impression, clear, detailed, and warm sound. There is a soundstage, but nothing special.
I use it with a MacBook Pro on a dock as shown in the photo, without any problems whatsoever.
It works perfectly with Tidal Master (MQA) in exclusive mode, so that the MQA decoding is done correctly. When in this mode, it cannot be used as an audio output for other things, such as system sounds, YouTube, music through the browser, etc. Another DAC or built-in sound card can be used for other sounds.
It also did not present any problems with iPhone & iPad Pro using the corresponding adapters (USB3 - Lightning & USB-C Hub).
As for the amplifier part, the result is satisfactory, but with high-Ohm headphones, it may not be able to drive them successfully to the desired volume. Personally, I have paired it with the JDS Atom amp.
Owner of the black (1.5n) for 8 months now. It doesn't have much power. Forget about driving headphones like 250 ohms. The bass is relatively tight and the sound is quite dry in the mid and high frequencies, whether with headphones or connected to my amplifiers (Kenwood 3060, Roksan Kandy)
Excellent sound quality improvement from PC to stereo. Easy installation. Works great on Windows and Linux.
Without having tried other products in the category (external sound card/dac/headphone amplifier), I can say that the comments of M4S4 fully cover me. The difference in sound quality from the same headphones is clear and extremely pleasant, specifically: sound stage, clarity, speed, adequate bass with very good control, clarity in different instruments without sounding "isolated" from each other. But the feeling of hearing the drum roll, the sliding on the strings, and other production details is amazing.
Setup:
- Bose QuietComfort 35 (yes, probably not the ideal headphones for music - I'm considering the HD600)
- Tidal Hifi/Master quality
- Macbook Pro (played relatively plug & play but requires some attention to settings afterwards)
I was skeptical, but in the end, I am very happy that I made this purchase.
Owner of the dragonfly black for almost ten days. Very good USB DAC. Impressive sound connected to my Dell laptop. I tried it with headphones and with my amplifier and noticed a significant difference in sound. It became sweeter with proper bass and cleaner mids and highs. I recommend it for accurate and extended listening sessions
Excellent dac/amp combo, currently at 1.7v which solved the issue with volume through otg on Android. The sound is much better than any onboard laptop or desktop motherboard. The sound can be described as very atmospheric, especially when paired with RHA T10i headphones. And all of this in the size of a USB stick
There is nothing equivalent for this money. If you give it quality sound, you will hear quality results. It can drive a great pair of 300 ohm headphones (Sennheiser 600HD)!!!!
Very good product and the representation is very good, very helpful!
